Title: JUDGING UNLEASHED 1
Post by: Mike on March 23, 2017, 04:02:00 AM
Hello!

As we begin to ready for the deadline, we are faced with one small, but critical issue: Judges.

For this event, I want every player who posts at least 1 RP to serve as judge. If you no-show, you cannot serve as a judge.

Never judged matches before? It's easy. In fact, I have a very simple breakdown on how to judge matches. You can read it by going up top and clicking Judging Criteria under Player Guide. I will also be including the text at the end of this post.

The deadline is on Sunday, March 26 at 11:59 PM EST. You will have to read all of the player submissions and then, using the judging criteria, rank each character on a ten-point scale, with 10 being assigned to the character you feel deserves to win the tournament. You will not include your own character in the rankings.

I need all judgments by Monday night. Please message me using this board's PM system, or DM it to wadecrewe on twitter.

After I receive all judges, I will tally up the points. I will use this to determine the bracket (in character it is considered random) so that the top two point getters end in the final fight.

Q: What about characters that have 2 RPs vs ones with 1 RP?
A: For this event, we will not favor characters who post 2 RPs over those who post 1. If a player submits two RPs, consider them as a single piece of work when judging them against the other characters.

If you have any other questions, just ask!

JUDGING CRITERIA

Use the following information when determining your ranking. These are listing in order of importance. We consider STORY-ADVANCEMENT the most important indicator of what it takes to win in UNLEASHED. It is followed by TECHNIQUE and ENJOYMENT FACTOR.

QuoteSTORY-ADVANCEMENT
The most important part of any submission written for UNLEASHED™ is the story a player is attempting to tell. In UNLEASHED™, we want writers first and foremost. We want compelling stories. We want to actually enjoy reading the tales of our players' characters. We want scenes that advance a character's life, and not simply serve as a snapshot of daily activities. Because of this, story advancement is the most important aspect of any submitted writing.

Unless noted by the player, stories are usually not public knowledge, though consequences of events in a story might become public knowledge. For example, if a character commits a crime and is arrested, the details of the arrest might not be public knowledge, but the arrest itself would become public knowledge.

Any sections that are meant to be public knowledge should be noted prior to the beginning of their submission, to insure that the opponent and judges are aware. Though we do not require our players to write "promos" for their fights, if they do so, we ask that they make sure it is easily understood by the opposing player, and judges, which sections fall under the public knowledge category.

If there is any doubt of what is, and isn't, public knowledge, contact the player or administration.

TECHNIQUE
We expect our players to pay attention to editing their stories before submitting them. While we do put an emphasis on things like spell-checking and basic grammar, a few misspelled words will rarely be a deciding factor in a story. We also recognize that our players are writing literature, not non-fiction. Rhetorical devices are often used by authors to convey aspects of their characters. Such devices will not be negatively judged.

ENJOYMENT FACTOR
Sometimes a perfectly written story just isn't that much fun to read. First, enjoyment and excitement are not always interchangeable. A lot of action in a story could be exciting, but if it isn't written well, it could be difficult to read. Likewise, a story that doesn't have a lot of physical action could tell an emotional story that is just as engaging for the reader. While Story-Advancement and Technique are fairly straightforward and objective, Enjoyment Factor is dependent on a judge's preferences, and thus it is the least significant benchmark in scoring fights.

In case you miss the DM I wrote on twitter, I'm not gonna be able to have time to judge all of the RP's in full because after the deadline has past, I'll be going on holiday with my mum and my sister so I'm unable to do that.

Even if I did, I honestly wouldn't do it because not only I'm awful at judging RP's, but I would give everyone high marks since I'm not a very good writer. Just not a fan of people judging other people's RP's when it should really be the fedheads themselves doing it, unless I'm reading it all completely wrong and I misunderstood how everything goes.

The issue with that (and generally we WILL be doing the judging) is that Mike and I are both competing in this as well. Which means that we can't be considered fair and unbiased... this is the next best alternative to average everyone's scores/rankings. Make sense? Probably not.

Oh right, sorry. I didn't realise you and Mike are competing in this as well. Typical of me reading things wrong, but still, I won't be able to have the time to fully read everyone's RP's because of going on holiday literally straight after the deadline.

As Jax stated, we are currently the only staff. That will be an issue rectified by the next card. We both want to ensure there is full transparency. I know some feds are run by people who do not take part. Personally, one of the reasons why I opened UNLEASHED, is a dissatisfaction with other feds. So of course I want to write also.

By the next card, we will have a full staff of dedicated judges to ensure that no one is given an unfair advantage. But for this card, I thought it would be fun to allow everyone to have a say in who wins the tourney. I consider UNLEASHED to be a co-op fed. It isn't "my" show. It is everyone's. And everyone has an equal stake in it succeeding.
